Lil Uzi Vert landed back in the headlines in July, this time for changing their pronouns on Instagram. The rapper is not only known for the music that landed them a Grammy nomination and seven nominations from the Billboard Music Awards but also for their facial tattoos and their androgynous fashion.

They are no stranger to controversy and drama, having seen several recent run-ins with the law. They've also battled addiction and talked openly about it, especially after the death of several high-profile performers.

Changing Their Pronouns

Their change from male to gender-neutral pronouns signaled a quiet coming out for the rapper - or at least that's what many of their fans assumed. The rapper simply changed the pronouns in his Instagram bio without saying anything, and eagle-eyed fans were fast to notice. But representatives for Vert declined to confirm or deny whether the change in pronouns meant the rapper was nonbinary. They haven't specifically commented on it themselves, either.

The change comes after a year of fan speculation that Vert was somehow part of the LGBTQ+ community, mostly because of their loud support and androgynous aesthetic. Page Six and Out covered the change in his Instagram pronouns, which helped fuel the idea that Vert had come out.

Dating

In the past, Vert has been tied to City Girls rapper JT, author Brittany Renner, and Dreamdoll. They were involved with Renner from 2014 to about 2017 when both went on the record to discuss the failed relationship. Renner noted that she had love for the rapper but wasn't in love with them. They were linked to Dreamdoll later in 2017, although she said the two had never made it official and were just friends.

Tabloids began reporting on a budding romance between JT and Vert in late 2019. The two quickly became known for publicly arguing and bantering back and forth on social media. While their relationship status was never made perfectly clear, the two were soon known as a couple.

Assault And His Ex-Girlfriend

Although the timing remains unclear, they were involved with Brittany Byrd sometime before 2019. Byrd is an artist and a stylist who has worked with celebrities like Lindsay Lohan. In early July of 2021, Byrd and Vert ran into each other while eating lunch in a West Hollywood restaurant. Byrd was eating with another rapper, SAINt JHN when Vert also turned up. Byrd alleges at Vert punched her several times and pointed a gun at her chest.

In February of 2022, Vert took a plea deal with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. They pled no contest and received a sentence of three years of formal probation, a one-year course of mental health and addiction treatment, one year of domestic violence counseling, a 10-year criminal protective order, and restitution payments.

Sobriety And The Future

Following the 2017 death of rapper Lil Peep, Vert made a public pledge to get sober and stay sober. Judging from the sentence they received earlier this year, sobriety is an ongoing issue for them. The change in pronouns seems to be one step in a long journey to confront demons and find themselves - hopefully, they can do this while still creating the music so loved by their fans.
