Singer Halsey is a music star. While she is openly bisexual, she is not afraid to stand up for her identity and educate others about it. Here are four times she did just that.

When She Declared Her Gender Pronouns

Halsey has been open about sexuality. Earlier this year, on March 13, she clarified her identity to the public. She updated their Instagram and Twitter bios to include their preferred gender pronouns, "she/they." After doing so, fans appreciated her preferred pronoun reveal; the singer took to Instagram to address fans and wrote "Thank you" alongside a red heart emoji.

When speaking about it, she said: “The inclusion of ‘they,’ in addition to ‘she,’ feels most authentic to me. If you know me at all, you know what it means to me to express this outwardly. Thanks for being the best.”

However, after declaring her pronouns, Halsey had to stand up for herself. The singer interviewed with Allure as its August cover star and was only referred to by “she/her.” Shortly after, she tweeted: “hey @Allure_magazine. First, your writer made a focal point in my cover story my pronouns, and you guys deliberately disrespected them by not using them in the article”.

She was honored with the Outstanding Music Artist title at the 2018 GLAAD Media Awards. Although she could not attend, she shared a video message with fans speaking about her role in the LGBTQ community and how she understands the importance of it. She said in her speech: “I spent the past year and the year before that working hard to be a better representative of the LGBT community I’m a young, bisexual woman, and I’ve spent a large part of my life trying to validate myself — to my friends, to my family, to myself — trying to prove that who I love and how I feel is not a phase; it’s not part of some confusion that’s going to change or could be manipulated. So I tried really hard to find the courage this year to write female pronouns into my music”.

In a tweet, she called out people's tendency to assume that if you're dating someone, that is the isolated proof of your sexual identity. She wrote: "So if I’m dating a guy, I’m straight, and if I date a woman, I’m a lesbian. The only way to be a #True bisexual is to date two people at once." In a later tweet, she clarified she was not supporting the idea but criticizing it.
